We are closed from December 12th until January 2nd.
Sparse quilting density involves stitching lines that are more widely spaced apart. This allows for more open areas of the quilt top to be showcased, while the quilting itself provides a subtle texture. Sparse quilting can be suitable for quilts with larger, uncluttered design elements or when you want the fabric and piecing to take center stage. It also maintains the drape and flexibility of the quilt. Sparse quilting results in a softer, puffier quilt. Quilting is typically 3 – 4 inches apart.
Example: A quilt with large, solid-color blocks featuring bold prints. Quilting with spaced-out straight lines or gentle curves that emphasize the simplicity of the design.
Medium quilting density strikes a balance between adding texture and structure while still allowing the quilt top's elements to shine. This density is versatile and works well for a wide range of quilting styles and designs. It enhances the overall appearance of the quilt without overwhelming it. This is a balance between a stiff quilt and a softer quilt. Quilting is typically 2 – 3 inches apart.
Example: A patchwork quilt with various fabrics and small pieced blocks. Quilting with moderate spacing between stitching lines using a design that complements the piecing without overpowering it.
Dense quilting density involves stitching lines that are closely spaced together, creating intricate patterns that become a prominent design element on the quilt. Dense quilting is ideal for adding depth, dimension, and texture to the quilt. However, it's important to consider the quilt's intended use, as dense quilting can make the quilt stiffer. On the other hand, dense quilting produces a more durable surface. Quilting is less than 1inch apart.
Example: A modern art quilt with abstract designs. Quilting with intricate, closely spaced geometric patterns that become a focal point of the quilt and add an artistic touch.
Custom quilting refers to a quilting technique where the focus is on enhancing the quilt's overall design and functionality while still maintaining its intended use. The quilting designs in custom quilting are chosen to complement the quilt top's pattern and theme. The goal is to create a cohesive and visually appealing finished product. Custom quilting often includes a variety of quilting motifs, such as meandering, stippling, or free-motion quilting, which can vary in density and complexity depending on the desired effect. Custom quilting may also involve using thread colors that harmonize with the quilt's fabrics or accentuate specific elements of the design.
Show quilting is a type of quilting specifically done to showcase a quilt in a competition or exhibition. The emphasis is on precision, attention to detail, and creating a quilt that stands out as a work of art. Quilts intended for show quilting are meticulously quilted, often with intricate and elaborate designs that highlight the quilt's craftsmanship. Show quilting typically involves more advanced techniques, such as micro-quilting (tiny, closely spaced quilting stitches), trapunto (adding extra padding for a 3D effect), and extensive threadwork. The quilting stitches and designs in show quilting are executed with extreme precision, and the quality of the quilting is a key factor in judging.
Heirloom quilting, as the name suggests, is a quilting style that aims to create quilts of heirloom quality, meant to be cherished and passed down through generations. The quilting in heirloom quilts is usually delicate and intricate, with an emphasis on traditional designs and techniques, such as feathered wreaths, cross-hatching, or elaborate borders. The quilting is just as important as the piecing. Special attention is given to the choice of fabrics, typically favoring high-quality, natural fibers like silk or cotton, and sometimes incorporating vintage or antique fabrics. Heirloom quilts may also feature techniques like appliqué, embroidery, and hand quilting, all executed with great care and precision. These quilts may use specialty thread and thread painting when quilted.
